How to alchemize pain into purpose.

The AI and Art Controversy; AI Can’t Mimic Authenticity.

Artificial Intelligence has taken over the web, including the art community. More artists are utilizing AI to help with their online presence and receive input on their pieces. While AI can be used to elevate art, it is also greatly impacting the artist community negatively.

With AI images overflowing Pinterest and college essays being generated, AI has been interupting the human experience of creation. The world is moving into a new era of quick outcomes instead of deep, hole hearted work.

When I was studying film at Portland State University, I had a professor bring the topic up.

“Learn to use AI to the best of your abilities, because it is here to stay. That will help you get ahead in the film industry.”

During the time he said this, there were AI videos circulating on TikTok. These surrealistic videos would be hard to create with a tight film student budget. At the time I saw the appeal of AI being used in the film industry, but now I take into account of the lost art of the work that goes into making a film. The set designers, the editors, the stylists, and the many more job roles would lose their dreams due to a robot.

Concerns of AI in the Art Community.

Here is a list of some statistics I’ve found on the topic of AI in the Art community,

  • 68% of art professionals believe AI will greatly impact the future of the art industry.
  • 78% of museums are exploring using AI for curation.
  • 35% of buyers have purchased AI art at least once since the rise of it.
  • 38% of buyers have concerns of purchasing AI art.

AI is indeed, a risk to taking artist jobs, as well as being (most likley unknown to the buyer) a competitor in the market. Although there will be a shift in the art community with AI taking off, there are still ways to make it in the art industry traditionally.

The Human Experience.

The rapid rates of robotic curation being preferred over heartfelt hard work through the hands of artist is concerning. That being said, AI can never replicate passion and pain. One thing that we as artists have that robots cannot replicate is the human experience. AI can’t mimic authenticity and gain an audience through connection.

Build An Audience

An Audience connects with your art (even you as a person) on a personal level. They feel as though they are apart of your image, your brand, your work. Through curating an audience through authenticity, AI no longer stands as a competitor. Relate back to the messages you would like to spread, the emotions your audience would like to feel. You control the purpose of your work, and finding people who connect with it. Through connecting others through the human experience, AI holds no threat.

Utilize Physical Media

To many, the use of physical media is a lost art form. Now in the age of the digital, it seems as though it is a social expectation to have our art curated through technology. I ask you test this, and create physical media of your work.

While I was reading “Just Kids.” By Patti Smith, a question arise for me. Was is possible in this day of age to become successful in the art community by simply creating? It seems not a first take, that our competors being high speed realistic AI images and videos. But even then, it could be best just to create and see what could come of it.

Through stepping out of the online space and creating physical media, there is less frustration around the digital market. A sense of freedom that you simply can, create anything you want without being tied down by electronics.

Create For Your Heart

Art has the soul purpose to speak to the people, even for the people. Even with the rise of AI, truly heartfelt pieces will stand above them. I ask of every artist to create with authenticity, something AI can’t replace. Creating art is a resistance against the struggles we face in this age, and it is important we stand for our freedom to express. AI can never feel love or hatered, so AI will never be a true artist. You as a creator, have the upper hand.
